Throughout the Serpent King I've learned a few things about myself that I did know before which is very surprising. As I read this novel I realized how much I relayed on escapism for my everyday life. Since drama and other stuff happened in my life I relate to Dill in escaping in music to be in my own comfortable life but sadly reality would continue to sneak up on me. Yes it also is also unhealthy to be in that situation for too long but it;s good to escape a little bit when things get to anxious *cough cough* exams. Another thing I learned through this novel is that my parents decisions/thoughts don't say how I show act or think. Yes there are things we can learn from them like how not to act when they are older, etc.
Before and after the novel didn't really change a whole lot considering I didn't fully dive into the novel as much as I should've. However it did change slightly with slight help about other things but that doesn't matter for this project. Since I've read the book I've been living more in the present and not replaying past events to obstruct with the present. During the book I never really thought about it. Like it was just something I had to do in order to not fail the class. All jokes aside I never really thought about how the book was effecting my day to day life just by reading words off of a page. There is a point in the beginning of the book where where it inspired me to work more on my stories.
Through the novel I think that Mr. Zentner was trying to get to the readers about escapism and in how it can effect you and those around you. Although escapism can be a big coping mechanism for people with my mental stuff it shouldn't be apart of you 24/7. with that Mr.Zentner was trying to show to the young adults that he was reading to that they can't let what previously happened in your life or anyone around you's define who you 100% are. Just because one little thing happened in the last week and it's eating you alive won't matter in a year. Yes there are times where it seems like it should but that person would have to learn from it rather than hiding from it all your life.
