Jeff Zentner's life During the SERPENT King
Jeff Zentner went about writing 'The Serpent King' while listening to two of the many songs that he's written from 2004-2009. One of the songs of the same name is what really inspired the kick off Mr.Zentner's novel. Although the two songs have nothing really in common Mr.Zentner combined the two into what we know as the 'Serpent King'. As I looked for the inspiration for his novel there was only one video that showed someone singing it but it's hard to understand. However, I did find the lyrics of this song and it has a lot of elements from Mr.Zentner's novel just in this four minute song.
When interviewed for the reasons for Zentner's book it was clear that escapism played a huge part of this novel through the characters. Dill's was music and friends, Travis was his favorite book series called 'BloodFall', and Lydia's was her beauty career/blog. Along with the idea of escapism was the idea of not letting where you're from (family wise) define how you should live or act.
The main character, Dill, in a way is a mirror image if the book’s author. Both Dill and Mr. Zentner were growing musicians of acoustic music. Not only does the main character relate to Mr. Zentner the setting of the book is in Tennessee but both Dill and Mr.Zentner had a quiet personality that most people would overlook in some cases. Not only does Mr. Zentner relate to Dill but also to Lydia and Travis too. Lydia was his idea of a daughter that he wish he had if he was going to have a daughter later in life. Travis is Mr.Zentner's nerdy side to the extreme, but he also loves to be in his own world in his head than normal everyday life at times.
